Peacemaker star John Cena has provided an update about the series as excitement builds for season 2 of the DC Universe show. Peacemaker is a spinoff spotlighting the titular antihero after his cinematic debut in 2021's The Suicide Squad. John Cena portrays the series' main character, Christopher Smith - who, despite debuting in the DCEU, has become one of the few characters that has survived the move into the new DCU continuity.
This DCU debut will begin with Peacemaker season 2, which John Cena has stated in an interview with The Direct he hopes will be released in 2025. This lends credence to the expectation that Peacemaker season 2 will follow the events of Superman, which is slated for release in July 2025. Unfortunately, Cena clarified that this release window expectation is the only Peacemaker season 2 detail he can share, leaving concrete dates and story details out of the picture for now. His full quote can be read below:
"I'm hopeful in saying next year... And that's about the only Peacemaker question I can answer."
Why A 2025 Peacemaker Season 2 Release Is Perfect For The DC Universe
The brand new DC Universe will kick off in earnest next summer, though the accolade of being the first official DCU release belongs to the animated show Creature Commandos, which is expected later this year. Nevertheless, 2025 will be an important year for the DCU, as Superman, Waller, and potentially Peacemaker lead the charge for its live-action offerings. While most of the focus will be given to Superman to ascertain whether the DCU will stick the landing, putting the highly regarded Peacemaker so high up the running order would be a wise move.
Along with Wonder Woman , Peacemaker season 1 remains the DCEU's highest-rated production, with a 93% critics score on Rotten Tomatoes.
This means that Peacemaker can help set the tone for the DCU as something distinct from the often criticized darker tones of the DCEU. It additionally establishes that this rebooted universe will relish in exploring lesser-known DC characters, something which Gunn proved was a winning formula critically with The Suicide Squad. As one of the only characters to move from the DCEU to the DCU, a sooner release time would also help to bridge the gap between the two franchises, as audiences familiar with Cena's Peacemaker series can get their foot in the door with the wider DCU narrative.
With Peacemaker season 1 ending in February 2022, the release of the second season also couldn't come a moment too soon. A three-year wait means anticipation for an update on Christopher Smith's story, which left off with him being haunted by visions of his late father, will be at an all-time high. A later release window for Peacemaker risks making people lose interest, while ensuring it releases the same year as the DCU's first movie can instead capitalize on the hype that 2025 will bring.
